Adam Wins English National Champs!!!!

Over the weekend the English National Championships were held at Tolcarne beach Newquay.
The contest was held in very tough condition's on the Sunday. Howling west wind and big swell made in tricky for every one, with huge paddle outs and mostly close outs.
Stoked to win my first open English title!
Here a shot from one of the winning waves.

Griffiths Claims 2nd In 1 Star LQS & Team O'NEILL Dominate All Weekend

TAPIA DE CASARIEGO, Asturias, Spain (Saturday, April 23, 2011) – Ben Skinner (Newquay, GBR), 30, has won the ASP Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) 1-Star Goanna Pro Tapia today after defeating fellow British surfer Adam Griffiths (Newquay, GBR), 23, in a hard-fought final, taking home the valuable ranking points and US$2000 winner’s prize. Skinner, who was able to make the best out of the good clean conditions on offer throughout the final day, was unstoppable en route to victory despite a series of solid exchanges with Griffiths.
Skinner, using both experience and great variety of technique to tame the incoming-tide bigger sets, led the battle all the way through to the end, using stylish nose-rides and fast forehand re-entries to secure points. With an accurate wave selection throughout the 40-minute final and pleasing the Easter weekend crowds, the experienced athlete was able to stay ahead and win the ASP sanctioned 1-Star Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) event for the second time in three years.
“I am so stoked right now and it’s pretty emotional,” Skinner said. “I wanted that win so bad, I wanted to do it for my dad, my new sponsor, my wife and kids and it’s just so good to take the win. I really overwhelmed wiith emotions right now and this win means a lot to me.”
With solid experience and using the priority tactics smartly, Skinner was able to capitalize on his opening good rides to patiently wait for the better walling-up waves and sections, using a maximum of speed to throw his nine-foot board off the top and show impressive commitment to the ASP judging panel.
“I started the final falling on my first wave and had to come all the way in to get my board so it didn’t begin well,” Skinner added. “The waves were good but it wasn’t easy to pick the opening ones and I am super stoked I managed to stick to my game and have a grip on the win all the way. Having a final with Adam was also a great thing, we are friends and he is definitely the young guy rising and I am sure we’ll qualify together for the ASP World Longboard Tour. A great thanks to all the support in recognizing our division and I can’t wait to compete at home for the European title and elite qualification.”
Finishing runner-up after the two-day event rally, Griffiths did not let go until the final hooter, paddling back out to the line-up to try and secure a second solid wave. Walking on his board from tail to nose and showing classical drop-knee frontside cutbacks, the other Fistral beach resident lacked some vertical sections to express the full repertoire of longboard surfing.
“I am super happy to have made my first final ever in an ASP event today and to have it against a friend makes it even better,” Griffiths said. “I was disappointed with my surfing in the final as I couldn’t find the good waves and just felt out of rhythm for this final heat. However, it’s a great finish for Ben and I and definitely brings great confidence before the second event.”
Leaving Tapia No. 2 on the ASP European Longboard Series and already eyeing the second and final event which will take place next August at his home beach, Griffiths was satisfied with his run in the Goanna Pro Longboard Tapia event, his runner-up finish to be counted in his career best results on the ASP tour. Considered one of Europe’s best longboard rising surfers, Griffiths will be much expected when he takes to the water in the final event in front of his home crowds.
“My goal is to get on the ASP World Longboard Tour events and this runner-up finish is just a super boost towards achieving it,” Griffiths added. “It’s been a great event for all of us, someone has to lose in the end and I wish next time the tables will turn.”
Placing equal 3rd in the event were French athletes Alexis Deniel and Remi Arauzo, both failing to advance through to the final despite some solid surfing. Both used to Semifinals and top finishes, Deniel and Arauzo came short of a second good ride in their respective battles letting the British contingent surf through to the final.
Having opened their runs on Day 1 with excellent levels including progressive flying maneuvers from Arauzo who landed the only Superman of the event in the Quarterfinals, the French team was not able to counter the Newquay residents’ assaults not failing in their wave pick and fast vertical forehand attacks.
“It was a good event and I felt good on the first day but failed in the Semifinals,” Arauzo said. “I felt I could have got higher scores as I wasn’t surfing too bad but things went Ben’s way and he deserved to make it to the final again.”
The ASP European Longboard Series will be back on from August 8 to 14, 2011, with the Relentless Longboard Masters taking place in Fistral Beach, Newquay in England.

Griffiths Controls Day 1 in Winning form, Top Seeds Eye Goanna Pro Tapia Win

TAPIA DE CASARIEGO, Asturias / Spain (Friday, April 22, 2011) – The opening day of the 2011 Goanna Pro Longboard Tapia, first of two events on this year’s ASP European Men’s Longboard Series, saw top seeds lead proceedings with a firm grip, international elite members Ben Skinner (GBR) and Remi Arauzio (FRA) advancing through to the Semifinals along with European top athlete Adam Griffiths (GBR).
Delivering an exciting mix of classic nose-rides and progressive longboard surfing, the sixteen athletes enjoyed the contestable three-foot (one meter) waves on offer, the usual massive Eastern weekend crowds baring witness to the 19th edition of the ASP sanctioned competition in Tapia de Casariego.
Griffiths (Newquay, GBR) made his intentions clear towards a win in the ASP 1-Star Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) event, the natural-foot experienced surfer posting the day’s highest single wave score after tearing a long right-hand peeling all the way through to the beach in the bay of Tapia. Securing a 9.00 point ride for a mix of hang-ten and on-the-rail fast frontside maneuvers, Griffiths set the bar before tomorrow’s showdown.
“The waves were pretty fun and some of the best we’ve had in Tapia ever,” Griffiths said. “I felt good out there, focusing on the better sets and did my thing. I got that big score and it is great before the finals tomorrow. It’s good for confidence. Hopefully tomorrow brings same, if not better, waves.”
Griffiths, 23, who has been touring on the ASP European Longboard Series for four years, is eyeing a win here to keep his overall rankings’ Top 2 finish hopes alive, the Fistral Beach resident looking to a first participation on the ASP World Longboard Tour.
“I’ve came close a few times already and I am really focused on making the Top 2 this year in Europe and qualify for the ASP World Longboard Tour events,” Griffiths said. “I would love to win tomorrow and head to the next event confidently, as it will run at my home beach of Fistral in Newquay, where I will be comfortable. Hopefully I can start from here and capitalize on this to fulfill my goal, a spot onto the ASP World Longboard Tour.”
Follwing Griffiths’ high performance and advancing through to the Semifinals in style, International elite member Remi Arauzo (Vieux Boucau, FRA) posted two impressive results on Day 1, the renowned talented progressive longboard surfer popping an exceptional ‘Superman’ maneuver to secure the day’s second highest wave score.
Arauzo, who entered the ASP WLT elite in 2009, is considered one of Europe’s most promising longboarders and will be focusing on a first win in Tapia when competition resumes. At 22, Arauzo has yet to take out his maiden ASP sanctioned event win, a goal he will be looking to achieve when he paddles back out for his Semifinal.
“The waves turned on for my heat and I was lucky to get some really fun rippable waves out there,” Arauzo commented. “I am looking at progressive maneuvers and innovation in my surfing and I am happy it paid-off today with that Superman air. I am still chasing a first win on the ASP tour and I hope I can keep going tomorrow.”
Arauzo was by far today’s most innovating surfer pushing his turns and looking for hollower sections, the young French man taking advantage of the improving surf conditions to secure his Semifinal berth.
“I’ve dropped off the ASP World Longboard Tour this year and I am just so focused on getting back up there,” Arauzo said. “I’ve been training a lot to improve and continue doing well so this event is just a first step before the one this summer and hopefully the qualification for the WLT. It’s on my mind and I hope I can start tomorrow with a win here.”
Former Goanna Pro Longboard Tapia champion and once again in unstoppable form, British surfer and former ASP World Longboard No. 9 Ben Skinner (Newquay, GBR) also managed to advance through two roudns today and will surf against Arauzo tomorrow.
“It’s always great to come back here and get the chance to compete,” Skinner said. “I’ve won here in the past and it’s special to me so I am looking forward to surfing my best tomorrow. I need a result here before heading to the second event at home next August where I’ll be focused on requalifying for the ASP World Longboard Tour.”
Athletes and officials will meet at 12.00 Saturday, April 23, and assess conditions for a possible 1 PM start, priority being given to the best tide and wave conditions for the finals.

2000 miles, cold water Nias, all in 4 days!

Ferry ride in to the unknown!!!
I have just come back from Central America on the 10th of march, After being home for a few days & getting back into the swing of real life. Instead of surfing at 5.30 am and chilling in paradise every day for the last two months!

After a couple of surf's in really small weak English waves, I got a call from team Quiver, Tom Butler, Mitch Corbett & committed camera man and shaper Luke Hart. The chart was on for Thurso, Scotland. the decision was made, the trip was on we were leaving in a few hours time.

Corbett in the fully loaded van!

So 800 miles later basically driving from Lands End to John O' Groats we arrived, tired but amped for some sick uncrowed cold water waves.
We scored some sick waves even though it was such a short trip, There is going to be a short video out soon?

It was great too just surf powerfull hollow waves again after how spoilt I had been in Central America. And being up there with some of my best mates & surfing buy our selfs, really topped the trip off!!

Go Pro clip on the longboard!
Just a massive thanks to O'NEILL for making such epic wetsuits if it wasn't for the 5.5mm Psycho Freak that I surfed in for hours, I wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in any thing else! seeing it was 7 degree water up there and snow on the ground!
More videos and photos coming soon.
Thanks for reading?

more central america!

The last few weeks have been really fun! I have managed to luck into a couple of big south swells, which is normally unheard of as it’s meant to be the off season!!!
I have been really lucky with my boards as well. Still having then all in one piece, no snappers! I just a quick big up to everyone at Quiver Surfboards, For putting in all the time and effort to produce such high quality boards.
I have been experimenting with my Go Pro HD camera recently. I have mounted it to the tail of my surf board, I have found it works best on my arm on a bicep strap.
Here is a short clip more to come in a few weeks?
                                                                    (Arm cam view)

Its been hard surfing with it on my arm, It just a unnatural movement when you stop paddling turn on the camera then have to start all over again and some one has probably snaked you in the time you have done it.
But its been fun just takes a little bit of getting used to? Its like being on your own personal shoot, I only seem to take off on the ones I know are going to barrel!
(This the wave from the land)
There will be more to come so please follow me?

Central America!

The start of a new blog page, I already have a blog that is through Quiver surfboards & Seabase which will be linked into this blog. I can just keep it up to date easier this way. So please become a follower, It won’t disappoint!!

I have been in Central America for a month now and have been scoring some really sick waves! Mostly just been surfing beach breaks and the odd river mouth or too!
This is the first trip where I have not taken a longboard away with me. I just wanted to get away & surf some hollow beach breaks? Well I can tell you that in the last month, I have defiantly done just that.

The Quiver boards that I got just before I left are going so sick, my favourite is the shortest board I have ever ridden, a 5’8 epoxy hart attack quad its flying.                                                                                                        The other boards I have taken away are 5’11 heart attack 5 fin setup. 6’0 dirty truck & a 6’0 barrel board, with heavy epoxy glass job.
I have fixed a Go Pro HD camera to the back off my board so a short film about my trip will be on this page soon.
I have a month left out here, so watch this space for more go pro fottage, photos and videos
